History
Since its inception in 1987 and continuously for 33 years, St. James Cathedral Friends of the Music Ministry (‘FOMM’ and ‘Friends’) has supported the St. James Liturgies through the sponsorship of the St. James Cathedral Choir’s annual Christmas Candlelight Concert and Lenten Concert Series. In addition to sponsoring the choir concerts, Friends has provided funding for the acquisition and installation of the Carillon system, refurbishing of the two church pipe organs, the Schimmel Piano, the twelve apostle candlesticks for the Candlelight Concert Series, and choir robes.
As an outreach to the Orlando Community, FOMM has offered continuing opportunities to enjoy outstanding music in the liturgy and in concerts by world-renowned performers as The Vienna Choir Boys, Chanticleer, Cantus, and our own Director of Music for the Diocese and the Cathedral, Adam Brakel.
Other special concerts included internationally known artists such as Vatican Organist James Goettche, St. Paul’s Cathedral London Organist John Scott, internationally known Organist Hector Olivera, Intermezzo Piccolo Group, Les Moineaux Du Val De Marne Boys’ Choir, and St. John’s University Professor Dr. Kim Kasling.
Always desiring to support the local arts performers, Friends featured local artists such as Pianist Wes Hamrick, Flutist Alexia Jowers, Violinist Lisa Ferrigno, the Stetson and UCF Choruses, the Bishop Moore and Jones High School choruses, and the St. James Cathedral Choir.
Young up and coming artists were hosted and supported as well as they began their careers. Friends was honored to present on multiple occasions, sopranos Kathleen Elbert Clyborne and Shannon Jennings Holman, an up and coming opera performer. From the popular concert series, Friends presented local entertainers featuring entertainment by Dan Witucki and Mein Heimatland Musikanten, John Charles and the Mariachi Cobre.
