Baptism is the first sacrament of initiation into the Catholic faith and the basis of the whole Christian life and through baptism we are reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, we become a Child of God, and we are invited to share in Jesus Christ’s mission on Earth.
Requirements and important information about infant baptisms:
We joyfully welcome families who wish to celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism for their children at St. James Cathedral. To assist you in preparing for this important sacrament, please review the following requirements and steps carefully.
1. Select the Godparents
You may choose one or two godparents (sponsors).
Each godparent must:
- At least 16 years old.
- Be a fully initiated Catholic: Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation.
- Not be the parent of the child.
- If married, be married in the Catholic Church.
- Attend Sunday Mass regularly and live a sacramental life.
If two godparents are chosen, they must be one male and one female.
Sponsor Eligibility Form:
Each godparent must complete the Sponsor Eligibility Form, which must be signed and sealed by the parish where the godparent regularly attends Mass.
2. Attend a Baptism Preparation Class
Both parents and the godparents must attend a Baptism preparation class.
The class may be completed at any Catholic parish.
- If attending another parish, please request a Baptism Class Certificate.
St. James Cathedral offers the class once a month, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. If you would like to attend at St. James, please complete the following form:
3. Prepare Your Documents
Before meeting with the Baptism Coordinator, please make sure you have:
☐ Completed Sponsor Eligibility Form
Signed and sealed by the godparent’s parish.
☐ Baptism Class Certificate
From Mom, Dad, and Godparents.
☐ Child’s Birth Certificate
4. Meet with the Baptism Coordinator and Scheduling the Baptism
Once the required preparation and documentation have been completed, contact the Baptism Coordinator to schedule your meeting to complete the Baptism process and schedule the baptism date.
Please note: A Baptism date cannot be confirmed until the required documentation and preparation have been completed.
“As a general reminder, Baptisms are celebrated every Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The third Saturday of each month is celebrated in Spanish. Please note that dates are subject to change.”

1. ELIJA A LOS PADRINOS
Puede elegir uno o dos padrinos.
Cada padrino debe:
- Tener 16 años de edad o más.
- Ser católico completamente iniciado en la fe, es decir, haber recibido el Bautismo, la Primera Comunión y la Confirmación.
- No ser el padre o la madre del niño(a).
- Si es casado, estar casado por la Iglesia Católica.
- Asistir regularmente a la Misa dominical y llevar una vida sacramental.
Si se eligen dos padrinos, deben ser un hombre y una mujer.
Formulario de Elegibilidad del Padrino:
Importante: El formulario debe estar firmado y sellado por la parroquia donde el padrino asiste regularmente a Misa.
2. ASISTA A LA CLASE DE PREPARACIÓN PARA EL BAUTISMO
Ambos padres y los padrinos deben asistir a una clase de preparación para el Bautismo.
La clase puede realizarse en cualquier parroquia católica.
- Si asiste a la clase en otra parroquia, solicite un Certificado de la Clase de Bautismo.
- St. James Cathedral ofrece la clase una vez al mes, de 6:30 p.m. a 8:00 p.m.
3. PREPARE SUS DOCUMENTOS
Antes de reunirse con la Coordinadora de Bautismos, asegúrese de tener:
☐ Formulario de Elegibilidad del Padrino
Firmado y sellado por la parroquia del padrino.
☐ Certificado de la Clase de Bautismo
De la madre, el padre y los padrinos del bebe.
☐ Certificado de Nacimiento del niño(a)
4. REÚNASE CON NUESTROS COORDINADORES DE BAUTISMOS
Una vez completada la preparación y reunidos los documentos requeridos, comuníquese con uno de nuestros Coordinadores de bautizos para programar una reunión y para hacer la programación del bautizo de su bebe.
Importante: La fecha del Bautismo no podrá confirmarse hasta que se hayan completado todos los requisitos y se haya recibido la documentación correspondiente.
“Como recordatorio general, los Bautismos se celebran todos los sábados a las 10:00 a. m. El tercer sábado de cada mes se celebra en español. Tenga en cuenta que las fechas están sujetas a cambios”.
